Later Today

Later Today

Instigation

Soft touch, slow caress

Just like your tenderness

Hold me close and hold me near

Tell me all you have to fear

Hold me close, hold me tight

Let me be with you tonight

It’s so hard so hard to say

I just never want to go away

There's nothing I can say,

Nothing i can do

Nothing i can do

To get in touch with you

There is nothing I can say

To change your mind and stay

I’ll see you later today

Hold me close, hold me tight

Let me be with you all night

It’s so hard, so hard to do

I just want to make love with you

There's nothing I can say,

Nothing i can do

Nothing i can do

To get in touch with you

There is nothing I can say

To change your mind and stay

I’ll see you later today

Break –

Soft touch, slow caress

Just like your love itself

Hold me close, whisper near

Tell me all that I want to hear

There's nothing I can say,

Nothing i can do

Nothing i can do

To get in touch with you

There is nothing I can say

To change your mind and stay

I’ll see you later today

About Later Today

Later Today – the history

I wrote Later Today back in the mid 80’s. The original version was a kind of Pop-Folkie-Country-Rock vibe. It didn’t quite match the sound of Modern Logic, so even though played live, never made it to a record. It was and is today one of my most “feel good” songs.  During the Cowgomoo years, Later Today by and large remained unchanged, although still didn’t get much recognition.

When TheBandBig (at the time BiG!) began as an acoustic duo, we were very focused on the Blues, and I was jonesing on capturing that type of feel (at least) throughout the catalog. Knowing that the pretty PFCR ditty was going to yet again get a back seat, I set out to make it a sexy, sweaty, blues drenched rocker.

Reckless abandon during the transition sections really sets this song apart-- bordering on hard jazz, the tension/relief of the chromatic rise really makes the song stand out. Even as TBB drifts away from the Blues, Later Today remains an important part of our set.

Later Today – recording

Recorded originally live acoustic for the “album that never happened” with me and JR set up in the main room of Studio 607. The “album that never happened” does exist, but was put on infinite hold to make way for the much louder, raucous electric “small” recording by the full band.

All of the “small” sessions featured the one room paradigm. After a few passes, we had the basics done (drums and bass) with all of the starts, stops and builds set on 11. Even though we record to a click, our natural rhythms weave in and around the beat, and really flourish on the stops and starts.

Guitar day was super fun during this song, using the phenomenal selection of amplifiers (all set to “11”) supplied by Studio 607, set up in the main room, and my PRS. It was truly a wall of guitar.  Later Today required a little more layering, to get the desired punch, with lots going on in the lead and cacophony sections. Mac also got additional passes.

All vocals were also done in the main room, with JR doubling me to emphasize the choruses and certain phrases throughout, a trick that we have done live since the beginning.
